A French chateaux just outside Barnard Castle, an absolutely stunning place. Inside there are traditional furnished rooms with beautiful furniture and objects. There are special exhibitions throughout the year, often based on art, fashion or ceramics. Of course the main attraction is the mechanical swan, 2pm there is a short performance, however prior to this we had a very interesting talk given to us about the history of the swan. I remember this from my childhood , putting money in to make it work! Your ticket once bought allows free entry for the year. I purchased tickets with Tesco Clubcard vouchers, so this was a very welcome bonus. There is so much to see several visits are probably needed. The cafe serves good quality fare, although you may need to wait awhile if eating at a popular time. Not cheap if having a proper meal, however there are cheaper snack options available and all the food we had was well presented and delicious. Disabled access is good and staff were very helpful in the cafe area getting my wheelchair in. There are folding lightweight chairs for you to take around with you, if needed to rest weary feet. A marvel in a beautiful and sometimes unappreciated part of the country.
A lovely place at any time but particularly so on this glorious January day. More to do outside than ever before, world class exhibitions and a national standard core museum - with a nice cafe too. What's not to like?
Wonderful place to visit for all the family.This time we only had a walk around in the outside garden areas, none of them are the biggest of places to see but there are still plenty of activities for you to see and/or do no matter the time of year, weather conditions, your age or ability. Will continue to keep going.
The whole atmosphere of the place is very encouraging, especially when you become aware of the story behind the establishment of the museum by the Bowes couple. The collection housed within is eclectic and very interesting. Well worth the entrance fee.
Not cheap but if you're into art & design it's worth it. A stunning building full of treasures! The cafes good too! Fascinating history of John & Josephine Bowes, the original collectors and benefactors, really interesting family history. Built a museum for the benefit of the people.
