Small quaint campsite, very well maintained and will grow into a great site as it develops. Stayed here twice
First class site, fairly new, but being developed with some nice details such as the flower bed, the hedging being planted and the stile beside the gate. There's also a composting toilet - a real eco touch (maybe some printed instructions inside would help users). Several good walks nearby and cycle routes too.
An outstanding campsite where perfection as a description of the site and facilities is an understatement. Beautiful views, lots of wildlife and tranquility. Ant Hobson, the proprietor, is a lovely bloke and takes pride in the work he personally has done to develop the site. The site continues to evolve and gets better and better. Ant is extremely helpful and very welcoming - nothing is too much trouble for him. The Old Armoury is ideally located for exploring Barnard Castle, Bowes, and the surrounding area, and is a perfect stop off when travelling North as it is only a few minutes off the A66. Access is excellent as is the road network from the A66 to the site. A lovely rural pub that serves food is within walking distance of the site. I am a canoe Leader and use this site as a base when paddling the River Tees. My last stay was for a week up to Christmas Eve 2017. Even in harsh winter conditions (Snow, ice & winds) it was a joy to stay here. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this site to you all. Please remember that this is a C & CC Certified site and as such does not have electric hook up, swimming pools, snooker rooms and bars. If you want all that then please consider one of those dreadful commercial sites. May I wish Ant & The Old Armoury Campsite my very best wishes for the future. Roger Goodchild July 2018.
